Syracuse 2B Chase Lambin broke up a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly to left in the eighth to lead the Chiefs to a 1-0 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox last night at McCoy.
The game was dominated by strong pitching performance by both clubs. Matt Chico (4-4) started and got the win for the Chiefs, going seven scoreless innings giving up only three hits. He walked one and struck out four.
The PawSox threatened to tie the game in the ninth, getting back-to-back singles with only one out off Syracuse reliever Josh Wilkie. But Aaron Bates grounded into a game ending double play to end the threat.
The PawSox were equally impressive on the mound. Fabio Castro made the start ad threw five scoreless innings, giving up only one hit. He walked one and struck out five. Tommy Hottovy (0-1) gave up the lone run of the game and took the loss.
Argenis Reyes had three of the PawSox five hits on the night. CF Boomer Whiting had two hits for the Chiefs.
The final game of the series between the two teams is this afternoon at 1:05 p.m. It’s also the last game before the All-Star break. Jeff Mandel (4-3, 5.08 ERA) will start for Syracuse. Josh Beckett will make a rehab start for the PawSox.
