The Pawtucket Red Sox broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the 12th inning to come away with a 5-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings today at Frontier Field.
The PawSox began the top of the 12th by loading the bases off Rochester reliever Juan Morillo (4-4) with one out. Paul McAnulty then grounded into what could have been an inning ending double play, but he reached first base allowing the go ahead run to score. Travis Denker followed with an RBI single giving Pawtucket an insurance run.
The Red Wings had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 12th, loading the bases with two outs. But PawSox reliever Jose Vaquedano struck out Dustin Martin to end the game.
The PawSox received a strong pitching performance from starter Enrique Gonzalez. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up only two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out six.
Five PawSox batters had two hits each. Gil Velezquez homered and drove in two.
Rocky Cherry (3-0) worked two innings of relief to pick-up the win.
The PawSox return to McCoy for a four game series beginning tomorrow night (7:05 PM) against the Columbus Clippers. Michael Bowden (3-4, 3.13 ERA) will pitch for the PawSox. He’ll be opposed by Jeremy Sowers (2-2, 2.89 ERA) for the Clippers.
